Change in Local Connection Rules for People Experiencing Homelessness

As of today, the law has changed which means that people experiencing homelessness will now be able to choose which area of Scotland they live and access services. MSPs approved the Homelessness Persons (Suspension of Referrals between Local Authorities) (Scotland) Order 2022 on 16th November. Previously, people were asked to demonstrate their local connection to the area they were making an application, e.g. close family living in the area. If they couldn’t do this, they could be referred back to the area where they did have a local connection.

It is hoped that by giving people more choice about where they live, they will have more chance of settling in their home.
